Cotton Theory® Camp and Certification
A five day, all inclusive training week.
Cotton Theory Camp is open to anyone desiring to learn Cotton Theory quilting. Certification is optional. Certification signifies your mastery of the quilting techniques integral to the Quilt First-Then Assemble methods of the Cotton Theory quilting.
Best of all, this training and certification course is presented with hands-on, step-by-step instruction from Betty Cotton. Betty is the creator, designer, and author of Cotton Theory quilting. Cotton Theory Camp is a five day event where you will work on and complete five specialized projects. Each module builds upon your knowledge and the techniques of prior modules.
Cotton Theory Camp includes:
• Five days of instruction in a small class (limited to 12) by Betty Cotton
• A five night stay at Camp Cotton Quilting Retreat.
• All meals (including breakfast, lunch, dinner, morning and afternoon snacks, and beverages)
• Supplies to complete five projects (including all kits and accessories)
• Shopping opportunity at the Quilt Yard
• Workspace and tools (including PFAFF Creative Vision Sewing/Embroidery Machines)
• Diploma for successful completion of each module
• If you choose to be certified, we offer certificates for basic and advanced Cotton Theory construction.
Curriculum
The following must be completed before you are qualified as a certified instructor of the Cotton Theory quilting. Those who wish to become certified instructors will present sample instructions and demonstrations throughout the training.
Module A— Basics of the Cotton Theory quilting, including the Highway and the One-Way Street; concepts of reversibility, including three-dimensional presentation; use of the Adhesive Quilting Guide and a variety of threads and needles; pressing; layering; and cutting. Project: Placemat and Candle Mat
Module B— More techniques, including borders, decorative stitch quilting, alternating folds on both sides, and aligning intersections. Project: Wall Hanging
Module C— Quilted embroidery, introduction to the Freeway technique, and applying a label. Project: Table Topper
Module D— Bobbin work in conjunction with quilted embroidery, applying reversible binding, and working with ribbon and yarn. Project: Tote Bag
Module E— Quilted applique in conjunction with bobbin work, plus introduction to the Turnpike technique. Project: Button-Back Table Runner
Throughout these modules, you will learn:
• Several Quilt First-Then Assemble™ techniques
• Helpful hints for cutting, layering, pressing, quilting, assembling, binding, and much more, including embroidery, bobbin work, and applique
• Stitches for quilting, topstitching and embroidery
• Needle and thread combinations for the perfect tension.
• How to troubleshoot various brands of sewing
and embroidery machines
• Knowledge to overcome commonly made mistakes
After certification you will have:
• Instant samples to advertise classes
• Knowledge to teach five different projects and five different bindings (The certification course pays for itself quickly once you begin offering classes.)
• Repeat students because each class will build on techniques of previous classes, and students will want to learn more.
